Local MP, Jane Hunt, is encouraging local residents to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day, despite the current coronavirus lockdown.
“On May 8th, we were all due to be marking VE Day with street parties, big events and parties with our neighbours. Sadly, we are unable to do that now as we continue to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.
“However, that doesn’t mean that we should let this major anniversary pass without commemorating it. It just means we need to more creative and think of other ways of marking VE Day!” Jane commented.
She is encouraging her constituents to decorate their front doors to mark the anniversary and to raise money for the Royal British Legion in the process. Some ideas could include:
- Drawing a picture of Loughborough on the VE Day in 1945;
- Decorating the front door with 75 Union Flags or poppies; or
- Putting up pictures of relatives who served in the Second World War.
In short, anything to mark this special day. The more creative, the better!
Once residents have festooned their front door, they are encouraged to take a picture and submit it to jane.hunt.mp@parliament.uk and then to donate to the Royal British Legion via a dedicated Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/TeamLoughborough if they possibly can.
“I am looking forward to seeing all the decorated doors throughout the constituency. Together we can celebrate VE Day and show our appreciation to all who served” Jane said.
