Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visits Loughborough
Rishi Sunak has shown that the Government has Loughborough at the forefront of its agenda during his visit to the town today. This comes after record levels of government funding for the area since 2019.
£16.9m of this has come from the government Towns Fund for the Loughborough Town Deal. The projects themselves, however, have attracted a total £40m of investment.
Great Central Railway is Europe's only double-track heritage railway and the only section of preserved mainline railway, the only place in the UK where heritage trains can be seen passing each other at speed, all important features which are unique to Loughborough. To help to preserve and develop this asset, it is being supported as one of the Town Deal projects.
Commenting, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said:
“It is great to be here in Loughborough today with Jane Hunt who is a fantastic representative for the local area. She knows exactly what the concerns are locally, and she is working hard to fix them.
“The Great Central Railway is a brilliant asset for the local area, bringing in tourism and supporting local jobs and businesses. We are supporting it through the Town Deal, because we know how important heritage tourism and attractions like this are to the local economy.”
Commenting, Jane Hunt MP said:
"I am so pleased that Rishi has joined me today. I have spoken to him about my 6-point plan and how the government can keep Loughborough at the top of its list of priorities.
“Since I was elected in 2019, Loughborough has received record amounts of government funding to support improvement to our local area – but there is still work to be done. That is why I am continuing to make progress on my plan for our community.”
